A year after the M23 rebels captured Goma, capital of Congo's North Kivu province, fighting may have stopped but life is far from normal. From wounded bodies to struggling businesses, the city is still recovering.

A year has passed since M23 rebels took control of Goma, the capital of North Kivu, in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Although the gunfire has faded, the war is still very present in everyday life.

The streets may seem calmer, but the damage left behind runs deep. Hospitals continue to treat people whose injuries have never fully healed, while countless others carry trauma that cannot be seen. Shops that once buzzed with customers remain shuttered or barely surviving, their owners weighed down by loss, debt and uncertainty. For many residents, peacehas not meant recovery.
