Open or closed: Is Germany a country of immigration?

Germany is desperately trying to attract skilled workers from abroad. At the same time, it is trying to keep out asylum-seekers. How much room does Germany have for immigrants? Guests: Ana María Álvarez Monge (Migration Hub), Zafer Şenocak (Writer), Malte Lehming (Tagesspiegel)

Malte Lehming is an opinion writer for the Berlin daily, the Tagesspiegel. He says: "Germany is in a global competition for qualified immigrants. To be successful, it must offer greater incentives and better conditions."

Zafer Şenocak is a free lance author and journalist born in Ankara and resident in Germany since 1970, who says: "Unified Germany still has no immigration policy based on reality but is under enormous pressure to act."

Ana María Álvarez Monge is originally from Costa Rica, now works with the Berlin-based Migration Hub Network, which provides  support to international social projects working with migrants, asylum seekers and refugees. Her opinion: "It seems like we are going back to well-known regulations, forgetting the real contribution that current and future migrants can represent to this country."
