Germany's Free Democrats had always been represented in parliament since the founding of the Federal Republic and were the junior partner in many coalition governments. But, in the last election, the FDP failed to pass the 5 percent threshold and found itself out of the Bundestag entirely.

New leader Christian Lindner has now been tasked with turning the party's fortunes around. At the FDP's traditional Epiphany conference he vowed to breathe new life into the party.
