Organizers Hope Plea Will Cut Down World Cup Smoking

Even though many in Germany consider smoking to be a birthright and national pastime, and despite the fact that there are no roofs on any of the World Cup's 12 host stadiums, organizers are hoping a simple plea to will be enough to keep fans from lighting up during the tournament.

Organizers said Wednesday that they would not enact a ban on smoking, but would makes use of public announcement systems to repeat "no smoking please" in a "mantra-like repetition," the Associated Press reported.

"FIFA and the organizing committee are hoping the appeal will help reduce smoking to the minimum at the festival of world football in an effort to protect nonsmokers," the organizers said in a statement.
