Pain Therapy using Virtual Reality

A hospital in the Netherlands is using virtual reality to alleviate the symptoms of people who suffer from chronic pain. VR glasses have long been used to try to overcome trauma and phobias.

A research project in the Dutch city of Groningen is testing the use of virtual reality to help alleviate the suffering of burn victims. Patients are able to enter a virtual world thanks to VR glasses. This helps to distracted them from their pain and fears. The idea is that they should be able to handle the pain with fewer painkillers in the long term.
