The local media is largely ignoring the massive protests in Pakistan's southwestern Balochistan province. This is what you need to know.

Balochistan, a province in southwestern Pakistan, has seen massive protests in recent weeks. The demonstrations were peaceful at first, but security forces have reportedly begun to violently crack down on the protests.

Balochistan has seen a separatist movement for decades. Residents are also angry over recent Chinese investment, including in the Gwadar port as part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

DW explains how the situation in Balochistan got to this point and how it could have ramifications far beyond Pakistan.
