When Kurt Biedenkopf became state premier of Saxony, he quickly became known as the "King of Saxony." For more than ten years, the conservative west German politician led his party to an absolute majority in the state parliament and was the unchallenged leader of the eastern German state. But his style also helped entangle him in a series of scandals that eventually led to his downfall.
