Peru has declared a state of emergency and closed its southern border crossing to undocumented migrants trying to leave Chile.

Peru has declared a state of emergency at the Chacalluta Border Complex with Chile, closing the crossing and deploying troops to stop irregular migration. Hundreds of Venezuelan migrants, fleeing Chile amid fears of a crackdown if far-right candidate José Antonio Kast wins the presidency, are now stranded in limbo. Authorities warn of a looming humanitarian crisis as talks on migration are scheduled for next week.
