In April 2026, Hungarians will be electing a new parliament. For the first time in 15 years, there is an opposition politician with a chance of unseating Prime Minister Viktor Orban. Who is Peter Magyar — and why does he pose a threat?

Peter Magyar has gone from Hungarian government insider to opposition hopeful in less than two years. He used to be well-connected in Viktor Orban's ruling Fidesz party and was even married to the former minister of justice, Judit Varga.

But in February 2024, he turned on his former peers. Magyar publicly accused Fidesz elites of corruption — and launched his own political career.

In June 2024, just months later, his new Tisza party took almost 30% of the votes in the European elections. Will he have a chance to win the April 2026 parliamentary elections?
