Pfalz - Climbing Red Sandstone Rocks in Germany’s Biggest Forest

The rocky landscape surrounding the town of Dahn in the Pfalz region is famed for its castles and bizarre sandstone formations. The best-known fortress here, Trifels Castle, is one of the most popular in Germany, with over 100,000 visitors a year.

Local lore has it that legendary German king Frederick I. ("Barbarossa”) once slept there. But as well as attracting history buffs, the elevated site is now increasingly popular among climbers.
