Police Arrest Dresden Bomb Suspect

September 22, 2003

Police in Saxony confirmed the arrest of a 62-year-old real estate agent suspected of placing a bomb in Dresden's main train station in June. The man confessed to attempting to blackmail the Deutsche Bank in Frankfurt by saying he would employ a bomb against the bank like the one found in Dresden if it did not give him €120 million ($137 million), Federal Prosecutor Andreas Feron said on Monday. The bomb, made up of around 1.6 kilos (3.5 lbs.) of TNT, was discovered in a suitcase on a platform in the Dresden station and defused by police. Many people would have been injured or killed if it had exploded, police have said.
