Poll: Germans would give Leonardo DiCaprio an Oscar
February 18, 2016
Leonardo DiCaprio's performance in "The Revenant" is Oscar-worthy, a majority of Germans said in a recent survey. However, only a tiny percentage said they followed the Hollywood awards.

Fifty-six percent of those surveyed said their Oscar favorite for Best Actor was Leonardo DiCaprio for his wilderness drama, "The Revenant." The 41-year-old star, who launched to international fame with "Titanic" in 1997, received his sixth Oscar nomination this year, but has yet to win a trophy.
In the poll, conducted by YouGov, only 11 percent of those surveyed chose Matt Damon ("The Martian") as Best Actor, trailed by Michael Fassbender ("Steve Jobs") with 10 percent.
Opinions were a bit more divided when it came to the Best Actress award. The highest vote (26 percent) went to Jennifer Lawrence for "Joy," with Cate Blanchett ("Carol") on her heels with 22 percent of the vote.
Only nine percent of German poll-takers saw the Oscar go to Charlotte Rampling ("45 Years") and Saoirse Ronan ("Brooklyn"), respectively.
Nevertheless, the Academy Awards - Hollywood's most prestigious accolade - don't seem to strongly interest many people in Germany. Only three percent said they would follow the Oscars "very closely," with 12 percent following "somewhat closely" and 34 percent expressing only slight interest.
The Oscars will be presented on Sunday, February 28 in Los Angeles. In addition to Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon and Michael Fassbender, Bryan Cranston ("Trumbo"') and Eddie Redmayne ("The Danish Girl") have been nominated for Best Actor.
Alongside Jennifer Lawrence, Cate Blanchett, Charlotte Rampling and Saorise Ronan, Brie Larson ("Room") rounds out the nominees for Best Actress.

And the Golden Globe goes to...
The Golden Globes, seen as Hollywood's biggest party of the year, marks the official start of the awards season. Recognition at the Globes is usually a good indicator of future success at the Academy Awards, which will take place on February 28, 2016.

Taking aim at Hollywood
Beer in hand, host Ricky Gervais got the show off to a promising start with a series of jokes that skewered awards broadcaster NBC, Caitlyn Jenner, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and - in a bit that clearly made the cut at the very last minute - actor Sean Penn.

Winslet wins first award
An "extremely surprised and overwhelmed" Kate Winslet took home the first award of the night, as best supporting actress for the film "Steve Jobs." "These categories are so crowded and crammed with incredible skill and integrity, and I feel prouder than ever this year to be included," she said as she accepted the award.

'Thank you to my imaginary friend'

'Music worked out first'
Grammy-winning singer Lady Gaga also took home her first acting award, winning for her performance in the TV series "American Horror Story: Hotel." "I wanted to be an actress before I wanted to be a singer, but music worked out first," she said, clearly moved. "This is one of the greatest moments in my life."

Best comedic actor? Matt Damon
Matt Damon won the award for best actor in a musical or comedy for his standout role in the not-terribly-comedic "The Martian." Damon carries most of the film, starring as an astronaut marooned on Mars.

'Do you need your glasses?'
Denzel Washington was honored with the Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement award, and got his family on stage to accept it. While it was moving to see the actor awarded for his body of work, you'd think he would have prepared a more eloquent acceptance speech ahead of time. Or at least remembered to bring his glasses. His wife reminded him twice that he needed them.

Threepeat
Jennifer Lawrence picked up her third Globe for her performance as the woman who invented the Miracle Mop in "Joy," managing to make it up to the stage without tripping (for a change).
