Portugal Fights Severe Wildfires
August 15, 2025
After the deadly wildfires that raged in 2017, the country developed measures that now serve as a model for other European nations.
André Mota is one of 31,000 volunteer firefighters in Portugal. He was called out on October 15, 2017, when a devastating wildfire reached the town of Santa Comba Dão, where he lives. The experience left a lasting impression on him. Today, he is responsible for civil protection in his home region of Viseu and coordinates prevention measures.
Growing up, Verónica Catarino witnessed wildfires firsthand. Today, she heads up a special training program at the national firefighting school, where she teaches students how meteorological and geographical factors influence wildfires.
Miguel Jerónimo works for the NGO GEOTA, supporting reforestation projects across Portugal. Part of his job involves clearing areas of eucalyptus trees - especially in the southern region of Algarve - and planting native species such as cork oaks, strawberry bushes and chestnut trees, because mixed forests are more resilient against fire.
