Price Hike in 2004 for German Beer

November 13, 2003

Representatives of Germany's brewing industry have announced plans to hike the price of beer in the coming year. Speaking at the brewing exhibition, BRAU Beviale in the southern German city of Nuremberg, Stephan Koller of the Bavarian Brewing Association said that increased personnel and energy costs made the price hike inevitable. He added that this year's poor hops harvest was also a factor. A spokesperson for Germany's hops association said that the extreme heat of this summer had led to the worst harvest in more than 50 years, but he made assurances that there would still be enough beer to go round. It is not yet clear exactly how much more expensive beer will become, as it is likely to differ from brewery to brewery.
