Priest Hears Explosive Confession

DW staff (jp)February 14, 2006

In a private confession to a priest in a southern Bavarian church, an unnamed mortal sinner unburdened more than his conscience when he surrendered a sub-machine gun, a hand grenade and a stash of ammunition.

God values truth, and thus believers can count on his promises to forgive repentant sinners. At least, that's what one fallen angel was counting on when he headed for a confession box in order to shed a few obstacles standing between him and heaven's gates -- but which probably helped a few others on their way there.

These included an illegally obtained Czech Scorpion machine gun, a Yugoslavian M75 hand grenade and a cardboard box containing 33 7.65 caliber bullets.

No doubt longing for the days when confessions included little more than the odd marital infidelity or taking of the Lord's name in vain, the priest in the holier-than-thou sounding parish of Pfarrkirchen alerted the authorities, but said his vows prevented him from identifying the wrong-doer.

It's also unknown whether he absolved the penitent, who probably needs more than few Hail Marys at this point.

He did, however, hand the stockpiled weapons over to the Bavarian police, who, unconstrained by any similar vows of silence, promptly launched a criminal investigation -- and are likely to demonstrate considerably less divine forgiveness than the priest.
