Protestors take Tower at Nuclear Waste Depot

October 29, 2003

Around 30 activists from the environmental group Greenpeace on Wednesday occupied a tower on the grounds of Germany’s storage depot for nuclear waste in Gorleben southeast of Hamburg. More protestors in front of the depot demonstrated against the government’s plans for shipping further so-called Castor waste containers to the area and making Gorleben the country’s permanent nuclear waste facility. Twelve Castor containers carrying German waste are expected to leave the French nuclear waste processing plant in La Hague for Gorleben on November 10. The activists in the tower hung a seven-meter long banner reading: “Only after the last drop of groundwater is radioactive will you realize that Gorleben isn’t a safe final depot for nuclear waste.”
