Recent weeks have seen the scales tip in numerous states that have traditionally been safe Republican bets. The old tobacco-growing state of Virginia, for instance, has been a republican stronghold for decades. But with this year's race so close, both candidates have spent a lot of time and money here. On Monday alone, John McCain was in Virginia for 18 hours, trying to mobilize undecided voters and rally his base.
