Refugee Policies after the Lampedusa Disaster

Pope Francis called it a "day of tears." Last week, the shipwreck of an overcrowded boat full of refugees off the Italian island of Lampedusa cost more than 100 people their lives.

German President Joachim Gauck has said more needs to be done to protect refugees, and that has stirred up a debate about German policies toward those seeking protection from political persecution or simply a better life for themselves.
