The AfD looks set to take power in a German state for the first time. In a DW exclusive, the front-runner in Saxony-Anhalt, Ulrich Siegmund, discusses his plans to detain immigrants, reform the curriculum and reset relations with Russia.

After roughly 15 years in office, Saxony-Anhalt's outgoing State Premier Reiner Haseloff will not run in Saxony-Anhalt's state elections scheduled for September 6, 2026.

The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) partyhas a considerable lead in the polls.

Its top candidate, Ulrich Siegmund, spoke to DW about his top priorities if he wins the election.
