Reporter - What Hope for Russia's Opposition?

Nikolai Lyaskin is campaigning for a seat in the Duma. He’s focusing on direct contact with voters and dealing with their everyday problems. But Lyaskin is also critical of Putin and has to cope with obstacles.

Agitators at campaign events, police harassment, physical attacks: Russian opposition politicians repeatedly report on the difficulties they face. Vladimir Putin and his United Russia party are firmly entrenched in power, and approval of Putin’s authoritarian policies has risen, especially since the annexation of the Crimea. Few politicians dare to criticize that course and demand more democracy. Nikolai Lyaskin is one of them.
