Nigeria’s Benin Bronzes, looted by British troops in the 19th century, were meant to be displayed at the Museum of West African Art in Benin City. But protesters accuse organizers of violating local heritage laws.

Protests have disrupted the pre-opening of Nigeria's Museum of West African Arts (MOWAA) in Benin City. Demonstrators argue the museum's name disrespects local heritage and demand control by the Oba of Benin. The dispute stems from ownership of returned Benin Bronzes, looted over a century ago. The state governor revoked MOWAA's land title, forcing an indefinite postponement of its exhibition.
