Rainer Waser is one of the winners of the 2014 Leibniz Prize, Germany's most prestigious research prize. The trained electrochemist studies nano-materials at the Jülich Research Center and Aachen University. Waser wants to make computers more energy-efficient based on the example of the human brain.

The idea is to make computer chips that work as effectively as neurons thanks to new materials and a new technology that puts data storage and processing units on the same chip. That architectural change makes data transport faster and saves energy.
