The German state of Saxony-Anhalt is regarded as a stronghold of racism and xenophobia. Many attacks on foreigners in recent months have cast a poor light on the police who have apparently tried to play down the seriousness of the situation. The state's Office of Criminal Investigation has admitted to altering the statistics. A committee has been set up by the Saxony-Anhalt's legislature to investigate the police's failures.
