A treatment called CAR T‑cell therapy is helping many leukemia patients, but high costs and complex production are slowing its breakthrough. Researchers are turning to automation to scale treatment and cut the price.

CAR T-cell therapy is a revolutionary development in oncology. The approach can be very effective at treating various types of blood cancer, but it also comes with a very high price tag. Because it represents the best current alternative for many patients, researchers are working to make production of the therapeutic cells involved faster and cheaper. Also in the program: high-tech research and endangered nature - from an electron microscope that helps better predict volcanic eruptions to prehistoric discoveries, the climate crisis in the Amazon, and a disabled kea parrot who rules the roost.
