Romania: A struggle for power continues

For the past weeks, Romania has been beset by a power struggle between the government and President Traian Băsescu. Now the struggle has entered its second round.

In early July, the government under Prime Minister Victor Ponta initiated impeachment proceedings against Băsescu, who was then ousted after a referendum. The process met with condemnation from the European Union, and ultimately the Romanian Constitutional Court reinstated the head of state. Nonetheless, the power struggle is far from over. Both the government and the prime minister accuse the other party of breaching the constitution and undermining the rule of law. Many Romanian citizens are now worried that the ongoing struggle may imperil democratization in their country.
