Romania: The Wall

In Baia Mare, Romania, the mayor has erected a two-meter-high concrete wall around Roma housing projects, effectively ghettoizing the community. Residents are outraged.

They see the wall as discriminatory and a breach of both Romanian and international law. But other locals who have long been complaining about noise and disorder in the area have welcomed the measure. Reader comments in Bucharest newspapers also suggest public support for the wall. A village in Transylvania has followed suit and built a similar wall - one that's three meters high.
