Row About Klinsmann's Future

September 5, 2005

The German Soccer Association's dual leadership, Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder and Theo Zwanziger, have different opinions about the future of national coach Jürgen Klinsmann. The 41-year-old former international striker will undoubtedly remain coach until the World Cup that starts on June 9 next year, but Zwanziger would like Klinsmann's future following the tournament to be set. "It's my responsibility as DFB president to discuss his prospects in a timely manner." Zwanziger would like talks to begin by October. Mayer-Vorfelder, however, said in an interview that Klinsmann's further work with the DFB is dependent on the team's success at the World Cup. "I don't think it's good to put Jürgen Klinsmann under pressure yet." Continuing discussions about extending the contracts of Klinsmann's co-coach Joachim Löw and team manager Oliver Bierhoff have become an irritant to Mayer-Vorfelder, who said that the fate of those two depends solely on Klinsmann's.
