In Mongbwalu, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, Ebola’s toll is worsened by fear and misinformation. Rumors have spread distrust, triggering violence, the destruction of aid sites and the escape of infected patients.

An Ebola outbreak in the Congolese town of Mongbwalu has triggered panic, misinformation and violence.

Distrust of health workers and false rumors about the disease led an angry mob to attack a hospital and aid facilities, forcing staff to evacuate.

Several infected patients escaped during the chaos, raising fears of further spread as authorities struggle to contain the virus and rebuild public trust in life-saving measures.
