Russia hammered civilian areas of Ukraine with hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles in an attack that stretched for hours into the night, killing several people.

At least 16 people were killed as Russia launched its heaviest attacks on Ukraine this year, firing waves of drones and missiles at Kyiv and other cities.

Air defenses intercepted some strikes, but residential areas in the capital, Odesa and Dnipro were hit. Ukrainian authorities say emergency crews were targeted.

Kyiv struck back, hitting oil depots in Russian-occupied Crimea and a port in southern Russia. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy vowed Russia must not go unpunished.
