One of the strongest earthquakes in years has triggered tsunami alerts from Russia to Japan, Hawaii, and California. Evacuations are underway across the Pacific, with nearly two million in Japan alone.

A powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, triggering 6-meter tsunami waves and damaging buildings and power infrastructure. In Kamchatka, a kindergarten facade collapsed, but no injuries were reported. The quake’s effects rippled across the Pacific: nearly 2 million people were evacuated in Japan, where waves up to 60 cm were recorded. Hawaii issued warnings for 3-meter waves, causing traffic gridlock, though no damage occurred. Alerts remain active in parts of the Pacific.
