An offensive by Rwandan-backed M23 rebels — who took over a key city in the Democratic Republic of Congo — has forced 200,000 people to flee, pushing the Great Lakes Region closer to a wider conflict.

M23 rebels, backed by Rwanda, have seized the strategic city of Uvira in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, forcing 200,000 people to flee and killing hundreds, according to officials.

The offensive threatens to escalate into a regional conflict, with fighting spilling toward Burundi. The United Nations has warned of a worsening humanitarian crisis in the mineral-rich Great Lakes region, despite a recent peace deal aimed at ending decades of violence.
