Sacked Commander Strikes Back

November 10, 2003

Former Brigadier General Reinhard Günzel, the man fired from the top job in Germany’s KSK Special Forces unit following an anti-Semitism scandal, has threatened to sue the country's defense ministry. In an interview with the Bild am Sonntag newspaper, Günzel said: "I am thinking about taking steps to repair the damage done to my reputation, which was gravely harmed. Every chicken-thief is allowed to have his day in court, but a German general is being sent into the wilderness without having a say. That is truly remarkable." Günzel was fired by Defense Minister Peter Struck because of a letter he wrote expressing his support for anti-Semitic comments made by teh Christian Democrat Martin Hohmann in a speech in October. Günzel, 59, conceded Struck was entitled to sack him at any time without giving reason, but objected to the minister's comments that he was "mentally confused."
