Saving Baltic Porpoises - New Warning Devices on Nets

An estimated 150 porpoises are killed by fishing nets every year on the Baltic coast. The marine mammals, which have to surface regularly to breathe, get caught in the nets and drown.

Although fishermen use devices that make warning sounds to try to frighten the animals away, these aren’t as effective as they should be. Now a marine biologist from the University of Kiel has developed a new device that he hopes will cut the number of porpoise fatalities dramatically.
