One man is proving forests can provide income without felling a single tree—offering a greener, more resilient future for rural communities in Mali.

A Malian startup is proving that forests can generate income without cutting trees. Forêt Forte, founded by agricultural engineer Ichaka Dembele, produces baobab fruit powder—a superfood product that’s popular among young consumers. The initiative supports fair wages for women’s cooperatives, and a shift away from charcoal production. By valuing non-wood forest products like baobab and shea, communities are helping to fight deforestation which has been a major problem in Mali. Felling trees on a large scale drives climate change and leads to a loss of biodiversity. Dembele is also actively involved in reforestation efforts, through an environment platform that involves more than 30 organizations and 1,000 young people.
