Saving Madagascar's forests with solar cookers

April 24, 2012

Madagascar was once a lush, green island. But in recent years, massive tracts of forestland have being razed to the ground for one reason - the demand for firewood is sky high as families on the island depend on it for cooking. Each year, around 200,000 hectares of forest disappear in Madagascar. Now, a Swiss aid organization is hoping solar cookers will gain some steam and halt deforestation. The aim is to cut reliance on firewood and restore the island’s forests. Find out more about the power of solar cookers next week on Global Ideas.
