Student protests are spreading across France as the government weighs further cuts to its education system. Students say schools are already under strain, demanding more funding, more teachers and better facilities.

France's education minister has announced the partial or total closure of up to 500 schools across the country on Monday. This follows more than a week of protests by students nationwide demanding education reforms. The protests have seen clashes between police and students and thousands have been detained.

At least 24 schools have been "burned or ransacked," according to officials. What is fueling the violence and is there a way out of the crisis? Biresh Banerjee speaks to DW correspondent Lisa Louis and political scientist Emiliano Grossman.
