Michael Grätzel took a cue from nature and built a solar cell that works according to the principle of photosynthesis. Like chlorophyll in plants, a natural dye helps the Grätzel cell capture the energy in sunlight. That makes the cell cheaper than the silicon variety - and enables it to be thinner and more flexible. Many of Michael Grätzel’s colleagues say he’s a candidate for the Nobel Prize.
