Sebikotane is proving that grassroots action can heal even the most contaminated landscapes. With science, plants and petitions, residents are bringing change.

In Sebikotane, a town near Senegal’s capital Dakar, residents are taking a stand against industrial pollution. Years of toxic emissions from metal and car battery recycling plants have contaminated the air, water, and soil—causing serious health issues, especially in children. So locals are pushing for change. From grassroots petitions and scientific biosensors to phytoremediation and reforestation schemes, the community is combining activism with innovation to effect change. They’ve even managed to get one of the factories closed down. Their goal: To restore clean air, safe soil, and a greener future for the next generation.
