Capturing the greenhouse gas CO2 and storing it in underground reservoirs, a technology known as CCS, is highly controversial in Germany. But in France, the method seems to have fewer image problems.

At one site near the Pyrenees engineers are testing how CO2 can be captured from a power plant, compressed, and stored in a former natural gas deposit. Over the next two years they hope to sequester 120,000 tons of CO2. Researchers are monitoring a 10-kilometer zone around the site to see if the gas escapes or the geological stability is affected.
