From towns and villages across Serbia, people are walking to Novi Sad to honor the memory of the 16 lives lost under a collapsed railway station canopy. With every step, they are demanding justice for the dead.

On November 1, 2024, the canopy at the entrance to Novi Sad railway station collapsed, killing 16 people.

The collapse was widely blamed on government corruption and negligence and triggered a wave of student-led protests and university blockades that have gone on for almost a year in Serbia

The students are calling for elections. So far, the government has resisted that call.

Students have organized a commemorative event in Novi Sad on November 1 to mark the first anniversary of the tragedy.

Many people are making their way across the country on foot to attend. DW spoke to some of them as they walked.
