Siemens Wins Contract with Cingular

December 2, 2004

German electronics group Siemens said Wednesday it had won a large contract with Cingular, the leading US mobile phone operator, to supply a Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) network over the next several years. The value of the contract was not disclosed, but a source close to the deal said it could be worth up to €1billion ($1.3 billion). A Siemens spokesman declined to comment on this figure. Siemens Com, the new Siemens telecoms division formed last month in the merger of its fixed-line and mobile businesses, won the contract with Cingular. Under the contract, Siemens Com will provide a UMTS network, which allows high-speed wireless data and services transmission.
