Signs of Progress in VW Wage Talks

November 2, 2004

Some concessions may soon be made in the wage negotiations affecting the 100,000 employees of Volkswagen, union representatives said Tuesday. "We are beginning to see a coming together in some specific areas. In other areas, we are still very far apart," IG Metall lead negotiator Hartmut Meine said. Nonetheless, thousands of workers once again laid down their tools amid protest work stoppages. "The fact that we are even here working should lead you to believe that we are working toward a solution," he added. But how long it would take to get to that point, he didn't say. The unions are expecting another nighttime talks session.
