Slow Go for SUVs on Autobahn

September 8, 2003
A Bavarian court has ruled Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) cannot drive over speeds of 80 kilometers per hour (kph) on German highways. Bavaria’s highest state court reached its decision after a man was caught by speed cameras driving his Mercedes-Sprinter SUV at speeds of over 160 kph. He later told police he had mistook his car for a normal car, not an off-road vehicle allowed to travel at faster speeds than smaller, lighter cars. “Those who register their off-road vehicles as a small lorry must be ready to take the consequences,” Jürgen Resch, managing director of German environmental group, Deutschen Umwelthilfe told news magazine Spiegel. Resch called for SUVs to carry stickers clearly signaling they are not allowed to travel at speeds of over 80 kph.
