A smartphone opens the door; the speech assistant dims the lights. For people with disabilities, this means more independence. They want to be considered when smart technologies are developed.

Smart home applications like speech assistants can ease everyday life for people with disabilities. So tinkerers focused on enabling barrier-free living have formed an online community. On YouTube, they exchange tips on eliminating barriers. One thing is sure: for countries with aging populations, more smart assistants will be needed. That’s why activist Raul Krauthausen says the disabled should be incorporated earlier into the development of smart applications.
