Smoking: EU plans picture shock tactics

Cigarette packets will soon carry horrific photographs of diseased lungs intended to warn smokers of the risks associated with smoking. The European Commission said the pictures, which will appear on cigarette packets across the European Union as early as the end of the month, follow in the footsteps of a similar marketing drive in Canada and Brazil. There, pictures of brain sections and damaged lungs have been on cigarette packets for two years. “A picture says more than a thousand words,” an EU spokesperson said.
