Generation Change

Zoe Flood, EastleighMarch 26, 2013

Islamist militants fighting in Somalia are trying hard to recruit young Somalis. But a young refugee, Shiine Ali, is determined to turn his peers away from Islamic extremism - with his hiphop music.

A Somali government soldier walks in front of a destroyed hotel now serving as an IDP camp (Internally Displaced Persons) in war-torn Somalia's capital Mogadishu, 27 September 2011. Reports states that the African Union Mission for Somalia (AMISOM) is expected to receive 3,000 extra troops from Djibouti and Sierra Leone before December 2011, following the complaints from the forces' commanders claiming that the current number is not sufficient even after the Islamist insurgents of al-Shabab have withdrawn from the city. AMISOM forces are providing protection for the aid agencies that are engaged in humanitarian mission for the famine-hit country. 750,000 people are at imminent risk of death in Somalia while 1.5 million children need immediate assistance including 336,000 children under the age of five who are severely malnourished.
