Until December 2025, Somaliland, a breakaway nation from Somalia, was not recognized by the international community. But Israel's recognition and subsequent visit by its top envoy is sparking interest and shifting the region's dynamics. How does Somaliland differ from Somalia?

Though not internationally recognized, Somaliland experiences relative stability — a contrast to the conflict that continues to engulf Somalia.

Taking advantage of that stability, the Somaliland government has been able to rebuild much of the region's infrastructure, which was damaged by years of warfare.

Several attempts have been made to end the conflict and reunite Somalia and Somalialand, including the transitional administration that was established in 2004.
