SA deploys troops as organized crime grips communities

South Africa has deployed more than 2,000 troops to communities beleaguered by escalating gang violence and illegal gold mining. Critics warn it won't fix the root causes of crime in the country.

Illegal mining in South Africa is estimated to cost the country €3.69 billion in lost revenue, while clashes between rival groups create fear in nearby areas.

To confront organized crime and provide relief for residents, President Cyril Ramaphosa has authorized the deployment of 2,200 soldiers to major cities across five provinces.
