Thomas Doll earned rave reviews after taking the helm at Hamburg. In his first season he saved the club from relegation, in the next guiding them to a third-spot finish and Champions League qualification. Shooting stars burn very brightly, but not for very long. Doll was dismissed in 2007.

He was soon recruited by Dortmund, but further misfortune there saw the former East Germany and reunited Germany international resign. There followed a string of jobs at increasingly obscure clubs: Genclerbirligi Ankara, Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia, and his current club, Ferencvaros Budapest. Kick off! paid him a visit in Hungary.
