US film director Spike Lee is known for being a longtime advocate of equality for African-Americans. As he celebrates a landmark birthday on March 20, here's a look back at his life and most memorable films.

Spike Lee took on the role of pioneer for the African-American cause at a time when Hollywood was far away from regarding directors and actors of color as a regular part of the industry.

We have him to thank for many marvelous films: Without Spike Lee, who turns 60 on Monday, US film would not be what it is today.
